Alexander Comyn, earl of Buchan (d.1289)

Biography
Alexander was the eldest son of William Comyn, earl of Buchan (d.1233), and his second wife, Marjory, who was countess of Buchan (d.c.1244) in her own right. Alexander became the sixth earl of Buchan on his mother's death. He had two brothers, William and Fergus, and three sisters: Elizabeth, who married William, earl of Mar; Idonea, who married Gilbert Hay; Agnes, who married Philip of Meldrum. He was also half-brother to Richard Comyn, Walter Comyn, lord of Badenoch, who became earl of Menteith when he married Isabella, daughter of Maurice, earl of Menteith; William Comyn, clerk; David Comyn, who married Isabel de Valognes, lady of East Kilbride; Jean, who married William, earl of Ross. He married Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Roger de Quincy (d.1264), earl of Winchester, which brought him lands in Fife, Galloway, Dumfriesshire, Lothian, and in England. Alexander held key castles at Kingedward, Dundarg (Aberdour), Cairnbulg (Philorth), Rattray, Slains, and Ellon. He also had lands in Fife and on the River Tay, and Mortlach, with its castle of Balvenie (BNF). He was constable of Scotland from 1274-75, adding lands in Perth, Clackmannan, Inverness, and Cowie. He was justiciar of Scotia, 1253-55 and from 1258. He was later sheriff of Wigtown, sheriff of Dingwall, and baillie of Inverie (Knoydart) between 1263 and 1266, and from Alexander III's death in 1286 he served as a Guardian of the kingdom. He had four sons, John Comyn, earl of Buchan (d.1308), who married Isabel, daughter of Colban, earl of Fife; Roger; Alexander, who married Joan Latimer; Master William, provost of St Mary's, St Andrews; and five daughters: Marjory, who was married to Patrick Dunbar, seventh earl of Dunbar (d.1308); Emma, who was married to Malise, earl of Strathearn (d.in or bef.1317); Elizabeth, who married Gilbert de Umfraville, earl of Angus (d.1307); Elena, who was married to William Brechin; and an unnamed daughter, married to Nicholas de Soulis. Earl Alexander of Buchan died in 1289, after 10 July. A. Young, 'Alexander Comyn, sixth earl of Buchan', ODNB, xii, 901-902; [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/6042]
