- Description
- Walter, archbishop of York, had commanded [and] summoned Alexander, king of Scots, and Alexander, earl of Buchan, by archdeacon of Galloway (Whithorn) and John de Balliol, by bishop of Durham, that on morrow of St Scolastica Virgin, they would appeared before him or his commissaries in great church of York, concerning election of Henry, abbot of Holyrood, called bishop of Whithorn, and his commissaries - Sewal, dean, Gofrey, precentor of York, and Simonod, archdeacon of East Riding - would terminate the said business. The king, on said day and place by Master Robert of Prebenda, his procurator, appeared, petitioning insistently to Master Cuthbert, procurator of abbot, that said election might be confirmed without delay; Alexander, earl of Buchan, and John de Balliol, although their citation stood firm, did not come all day as expected, whence, so much depositions of witnesses concerning said election as contingents themselves, abbot appeared personally before Walter and thus [...] because election is agreed to have been canonical and performed amicably, by his authority, he establishes him [in office]. Done in great church of York, in presence of Master Stephen of Eccle[sfeld, canon] of York, Master R. Pepin, subdean of same, John le Bouer, canon of St [...] [...adi] of Pavely, vicar of Tykhill, and many others.
