John Balliol (d.1268)

Biography
John was the eldest son of Hugh Balliol, lord of Barnard Castle in England (d.1229). John's inheritance included the lordship of Barnard Castle (County Durham), of Bywell (Northumberlandshire) and of Hitchin (Hertfordshire) and he also had four lordships in France (Bailleul-en-Vimeu, Hélicourt, Dompierre, Hornoy). In 1233 he married Dervorguilla, daughter of Alan, lord of Galloway, which brought him vast lands throughout Scotland and England. He had four sons (Hugh (d.1271), Alan (d.a.1271), Alexander (d.1278), John (d.1314)) and four daughters (Margaret, Cecily, Eleanor, Ada) with his wife, who all made prominent marriages within the aristocracy of the day. He began the foundations of Balliol College in the 1260s, which was completed by his wife in 1282. John died between 17 and 24 October 1268. His son (John) and his grandson (Edward) both became kings of Scots. A. Beam, The Balliol Dynasty, 1210-1364 (Edinburgh, 2008); G.P.
