Gilbert de Umfraville (d.1245)
- Biography
- Gilbert (II) was the son and heir of Richard de Umfraville (d.1226), lord of Prudhoe and Redesdale (Northumberland), titles which Gilbert inherited upon his father's death. They also held the castle of Harbottle in England, as well as many estates throughout the kingdom. The family also held lands in Scotland: Dunipace, Kinnaird and were associated later with lands in Carrick and Ayr. Gilbert married first Theophania, perhaps a member of the Balliol family, who brought her husband the lands of Mickley in England. They had no children. She died before 1243, in which year he married Maud/Mathilda, daughter of Malcolm, earl of Angus and widow of John Comyn. This marriage gave the Umfravilles the earldom of Angus and castle of Redcastle, which passed to the only son of the marriage, Gilbert (III) (d.1307). Gilbert (II) died in early 1245 and was buried at Hexham Abbey. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/54515
