William of Greenlaw, master (d.1247)

Biography
Watt, Graduates, 242-3: Was the son of Ronald, son of William. He was associated with lands of Greenlaw in Berwickshire. He was Master by 1212-13, and appears as a clerk in 1214 and again in 1225/6. He held the church of Rossie (Perthshire) by October 1214. He resigned this church in favour of William de St German. He held the church of Kirkcaldy (Fife) in 1220×25. He was given a prebend of Auckland (Durham) by the archbishop of York in October 1227. By 1237/8 he was mentioned as a canon of Glasgow. Around 1225/6 he appears to have moved to England, perhaps in the service of Bishop Richard de Marisco of Durham for a while. After the bishop's death in May 1226, Greenlaw was employed in the English royal service as 'familiar clerk'. He was sent to York in October 1226, and to the papal curia in November 1227. He returned to Scotland by January 1228/9. He died in 1247 and was buried in the chapter-house at Melrose Abbey.
