Bernard, abbot of Arbroath, chancellor

Biography
Parentage, date of birth and family name unknown. May have been the Bernard, abbot of the Tironensian abbey of Kilwinning, noted in the Ragman Rolls of 1296. Some speculation that his allegiance to Robert I resulted in his displacement from Kilwinning after 1306 and his appointment, by 1310, to the abbacy of the Tironensian order’s house at Arbroath in Bruce-held Angus. Was designated as Robert I’s chancellor by 1308 and thereafter served as an ambassador and administrator for the regime. Traditionally assigned role as author the Declaration of Arbroath now disputed. In 1328 became bishop of Sodor [the Isles] and relinquished the office of chancellor.
