William Sinclair (d.1299×1303)

Biography
Sir William Sinclair (de St Clare), was of Anglo-Norman origins and descended from William de St Clair, who had received the barony of Roslin from David I. He was the son of William (d.c.1270). Either he or his father was sheriff of Haddington in 1264 and of Linlithgow and Edinburgh in 1266. William Sinclair is described as guardian of Alexander, son of Alexander III of Scots in the early 1280s. He was also the custodian of Dumfries and Edinburgh castles. After 1286, he was sheriff of Dumfries and justiciar of Galloway. He was an auditor for John Balliol, later king, in 1290-92 and was probably one of the twelve men appointed to assist in the government in 1295. He married Amicia, who was described as his widow as early as 1299, by whom he had three sons, Henry, William Sinclair (d.1337), bishop of Dunkeld, and Gregory, and one daughter, Annabella. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/25632
