Peter Ramsay, bishop of Aberdeen (d.1256)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 2: Peter was elected bishop of Aberdeen and, afterwards, received a papal mandate for his consecration on 13 May 1247. He occurs on 18 April 1256 and died later that year. Watt, Graduates, 460: Peter was the illegitimate son of a clerk and an unmarried woman. His father was a Ness de Rameseia from Fife (d.a.1220) and he had an older, legitimate, brother, also called Ness de Ramesey. He also had a brother named William. Peter was Master by 1217-18. He probably studied theology in Parish between 1217-27 and he returned to Oxford in 1233-4, earning a doctor of theology by spring 1235. He was back in Scotland by 6 July 1237. He was a deacon still in 1247 when he was postulated as bishop. He was also mentioned as a canon of Dunkeld on 26 April 1245 and might have been chancellor of Aberdeen 1240×7. He was chancellor of Scotland after May 1246, which he still held when confirmed as bishop of Aberdeen in May 1247. He last occurs on 18 April 1256, and was believed to be alive in 9 January 1257 at the curia. His successor was elected before 4 October 1257.
