Robert [Bruce] I, king of Scots (d.1329)

Biography
Was the son of Robert de Bruce, lord of Annandale (d.1304) and Marjory, countess of Carrick (d. c.1290). He was born on 11 July 1274, location now disputed. Bruce’s grandfather (also Robert) had been the principal challenger to John Balliol in the dispute over the Scottish succession that ended in 1292 with a resolution in Balliol’s favour. When war broke out between England and the Balliol regime in 1296 Robert initially adhered to the English king Edward I, but in the following year he was involved in a rebellion against the English administration established after Balliol’s defeat and deposition. Robert remained active in resisting Edward, acting as a co-Guardian of the realm 1298-1300, but in 1302, alarmed by reports that John Balliol might be restored, he transferred his allegiance back to the English king. This arrangement ended on 10 February 1306 when a meeting in the Franciscan church at Dumfries between Bruce and the leading pro-Balliol magnate, John Comyn of Badenoch, ended in a violent clash that left Comyn and several of his company dead. In the aftermath of Comyn’s death Robert moved to vindicate his family’s claim to the Scottish throne and had himself crowned as king at Scone on 25 March 1306, enraging Edward I, Comyn’s kinsmen and, more generally, Scots who regarded Balliol as their legitimate sovereign. Bruce experienced a sequence of military defeats in the summer of 1306 at the hands of English and Scottish opponents and by September 1306 he was a fugitive. He may have fled to Ireland and/or the Western Isles from whence he returned to resume campaigning in the south-west of Scotland in the spring of 1307. Over the next two years Robert defeated his domestic enemies and either sent them into exile or forced them into his allegiance. Simultaneously he struck at territories and fortresses held by English forces across the realm. The highpoint of Robert’s military career came on 23-4 June 1314 when his army defeated a large English force personally led by Edward II at the battle of Bannockburn. Towards the end of his reign, in 1328, Robert concluded an agreement with the fragile minority government of Edward III that apparently secured English recognition of Bruce’s kingship and the independence of the Scottish realm. The so-called Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton involved a marriage agreement between Robert's infant son David and Edward III’s seven-year-old sister, Joan. Robert died on 7 June 1329 at his favoured dwelling house of Cardross near Dumbarton. Robert was twice married, first (c.1290) to Isabel, daughter of Donald, earl of Mar, with whom he had an only child, Marjory (d.1317) whose son with Walter Steward would become king as Robert II in 1371. Bruce’s second marriage (1302) was to Elizabeth de Burgh, daughter of Richard de Burgh, earl of Ulster. The marriage produced four children: Matilda, who married a squire named Thomas Isaac; Margaret, who married William earl of Sutherland c.1342; David II, who succeeded his father as king in 1329; John, who died in childhood. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/3754
