William Landellis, bishop of St Andrews (d. 1385)

Biography
From a minor landowning family in Berwickshire/Roxburghshire. Early stages of his ecclesiastical career obscure and may have spent some time in France. Received support of King Philippe VI of France and David II in appointment to the bishopric of St Andrews by pope Benedict XII on 18 February 1342. Returned to Scotland later that year. Thereafter closely aligned with David II. From 1357 Landel was a regular royal councillor and trusted diplomat, especially prominent in Anglo-Scottish negotiations. Landellis crowned David’s successor Robert II at Scone on 16 March 1371 and continued as a witness to royal charters early in Robert’s reign, but his governmental and diplomatic activity steadily declined, perhaps because of age related infirmity. In 1381 Landellis was reported to be feeble and broken with age.
