Edward I, king of England (d.1307)

Biography
Edward was the eldest son of Henry III (d.1272) and Eleanor of Provence (d.1291) and was born at Westminster on the night of 17/18 June 1239. He was brother to Margaret (d.1275), wife of Alexander III of Scotland (d.1286); Beatrice, who married Jean, eldest son of Jean (I), duke of Brittany; Edmund (d.1296), earl of Lancaster; and Katharine (d. 1257). Edward married Eleanor of Castile (d. 1290) in 1254 and had probably fourteen children with her, although only six survived into adulthood: Edward II (d. 1327), Eleanor, Joan of Acre (d.1307), wife of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Hereford and Gloucester, Margaret, Mary of Woodstock (d.c.1332), Elizabeth, wife of John, count of Holland. His second marriage was to Margaret (d.1318), sister of King Philip IV of France (d.1314), and with her had three children, Thomas of Brotherton (d.1338), earl of Norfolk, Edmund of Woodstock (d.1330), earl of Kent, and Eleanor. King Edward I died at Burgh by Sands on 7 July 1307, and he was buried at Westminster Abbey. M. Prestwich, 'Edward I', ODNB, xvii, 809-824; [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/8517]
