Description
William of Brechin, son of Sir Henry of Brechin, son of Earl David, for the welfare of the souls of the illustrious kings of Scotland William and Alexander, Sir John earl of Chester, Sir Henry his (William’s) father and Lady Juliana his mother, and for others, has given, granted and by this his present charter established to the chapel of Saint Mary the Virgin of Brechin he has founded (i.e., the Maison Dieu), and the master and chaplains and paupers there, in free, pure and perpetual alms, the whole land on which the chapel is sited (Maisondieu, ANG), by stated bounds, noting the land of Moses the carver and the land of Walter Cook, the mill of Brechin with multure of the same villa to the thirteenth vessel of grain grown there, except the grain of his demesne, and with multure of the villa of Leuchland (ANG) to the sixteenth vessel, and multure of the villa of ‘Heychame’ to the twentieth vessel, and multure of the villa of ‘Baldougathy’ which is Walter Cook’s (prob. Cookston, ANG), to the twentieth vessel, with multure of the villa of ‘Buthyrkil’ (perhaps Burghill?) to the thirteenth vessel, and multure of the villa of Pittendriech (ANG) to the thirteenth vessel, with multure of the land of Moses the carver, to the twentieth vessel, and with all forinsec suits and other things pertaining to the mill. He also wills and grants that the mills and its watercourse be supported and repaired by the men of the shire in perpetuity. The millers of that mill will be instituted by the master of the said house. He also wills that where the land of the said house is adjacent to his own land, that they will have common pasture between his land and theirs. He notifies that when the master of the house dies, it will be his heirs who will present a replacement to the bishop to be instituted.
