Adam of Makerstoun, master, provost (d.1280×86)

Biography
Watt, Graduates, 370-73: Adam's surname comes from the lands and parish of Makerstoun, Roxburghshire. He was born in or before 1220 and may have had a brother, who appears only as 'R.'. He was Master from 21 Dec. 1240 and may have studied canon law at Oxford. He later became a bishop's official and was appointed papal chaplain to Urban IV by 17 June 1262. His first known benefice was the vicarage of Cranston (MLO), in the 1230s. He was first mentioned in the provostry of St Mary in St Andrews on 21 August 1249, and was the first known provost there, a position he held until at least 11 Sept. 1280. He was also rector of the church of Collessie (FIF) from possibly 11 May 1253 to 17 June 1262, at which date he resigned. By 26 May 1263 he also held the church of Ceres (FIF). Adam appears as a clerk in the familia of Bishop David of Bernham and once appears as an envoy to England in 1258. He is not found after September 1280. He died 1280×86, probably towards the end of that period. Watt and Murray, Fasti, 418, 484: He occurs as an official of St Andrews on 20 December 1259 and 30 May 1260.
