David II, king of Scots (d. 1371)

Biography
David II (1324–1371), king of Scots, was the son of Robert I (1274-1329) and his second wife Elizabeth de Burgh (d.1327), daughter of Richard de Burgh, earl of Ulster. One of twins born in Dunfermline Abbey on 5 March 1324 (his brother John died before July 1326). David was married, at the age of four, on 17 July 1328 to Joan (1321-62) seven-year-old daughter of Edward II, king of England as a result of the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton which sought to secure a lasting Anglo-Scottish peace. David succeeded to his father at the age of five on 7 June 1329. On 24 November 1331 he became the first Scottish king to be anointed and crowned, the papal concession of this right having been issued on 13 June 1329. In May 1334 David and his wife Joan were forced to flee to France in the face of Edward Balliol’s English backed campaigns within Scotland. David was maintained by Philippe VI at Château Gaillard in Normandy for seven years before returning to Scotland in June 1341. In October 1346, responding to pleas from his onetime patron Philippe VI, David launched an invasion of northern England. On 17 October at Neville’s Cross David’s army was routed with huge losses while the king himself was captured. David’s English captivity lasted for eleven years. Negotiations over David’s release raised the possibility of one of Edward III’s sons being accepted as heir to the kingdom of Scotland if David died childless. This plan was rejected by a Scottish parliament in 1352 and David eventually obtained his freedom in 1357 as a result of a more conventional ransom arrangement, the so-called treaty of Berwick, which required the payment of 100,000 merks over ten years. The Scots had difficulty in making these payments and by 1363 possible concessions over the succession to the Scottish throne were once again discussed and then rejected by a Scottish parliament in 1364. After his release David sought to secure his succession. The death of his estranged wife Joan in England in 1362 allowed him to marry Margaret Drummond, widow of Sir John Logie, in 1363. He divorced Margaret in 1369 and was planning a marriage to Agnes Dunbar, the sister of the earl of March, when he died on 22 February 1371 at Edinburgh Castle. He was buried in Holyrood Abbey. David produced no children, legitimate or illegitimate, and he was succeeded by his nephew Robert the Steward who became king as Robert II. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/3726
