Description
After these things, when a parliament of the aforementioned illustrious lord king of England had been announced, the noblemen and prelates of each kingdom having consented, on the Octave of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the year of the Lord and the Indiction recorded before [AD 1296, 9th indiction], at Berwick upon Tweed, the bishops, abbots, and priors, with other prelates of the Church, as well as the noblemen, earls, barons, and other knights and chief men of the kingdom of Scotland, with the communities of the cities and towns, having gathered; on 28th day of August, in the 1296th year from the Nativity of the Lord, and the 9th indiction, there being present the noble lords, John Warenne, Roger of Norfolk, William of Warwick, Patrick of Dunbar and March, and Gilbert of Angus, earls; the lords John of Hastings, John Wake, Hugh le Despenser, Brian fitz Alan, Peter Corbet, Ralph fitz William, John Marmeduke, Walter of Huntercombe, and Robert of Hilton, barons, especially called and summoned as witnesses, with others, knights and clerks as well as laymen, in a large gathering; and with the subscribed Notary; there came in full parliament of the king of England, compelled neither by force nor by fear, but by their free will, the noblemen and prelates of the kingdom of Scotland written above, as well as the knights, and chief men, and dwellers in the kingdom, who had performed fealty to the king of England, as laid out before, on the days and places written above; together with each and every other person named below, and performed the same fealty to the king of England performed before, with the revocation and cancellation of any confederations, contracts, and pacts made with Philip, king of the French, against the king of England; and with the common consent of all the prelates and noblemen of the kingdom of Scotland, and of the other chief men, inhabitants, and communities of the towns of the whole of the kingdom of Scotland, and by unanimous wish, they performed fealty and homage to the king of England for all their lands that were within the said kingdom of Scotland; and having taken hold of and kissed the most holy gospels, they confirmed their fealty in the form written below, bound by a bodily oath; and upon their fealty and homage performed, as it is shown below, they again made their letters patent, sealed with their pendant seals.
