On the same day [6 July 1296], at Arbroath, in the presence of the lords John Wake, John of Hastings, Brian fitz Alan, and Peter Corbet, knights, and the Notary, with many others, both knights and lesser members of the king's household, the religious men, brother Henry, abbot of Arbroath, of the Order of St Benedict, and the convent of the same place, attained the trust and goodwill of the lord king of England, not by force, but of their own accord; and they entirely annulled alliances, contracts, agreements and pacts entered into with the king of the French in their name; and having taken hold of and kissed the holy gospels, they performed fealty to the lord king of England; and upon their fealty so made, they made their letters patent sealed with their common seal.
