- James, steward of Scotland, son of the Nobleman Sir Alexander, steward of Scotland, has given, granted, and by this his present charter established to William of Preston, son of John of Preston, for his homage and service, all his land in the villa of Tranent (ELO), which his father Sir Alexander took in exchange for the land of ‘Murcheley’ from Sir Alexander Comyn, earl of Buchan, with neyfs and the offspring and with all liberties and easements pertaining to the land, which Sir Simon Fleming held of him (James) and which Sir Simon resigned and quitclaimed and by rod and staff restored all his right and claim into his hand in the hall of Edinburgh Castle at the assembly (colloquium) of the lord king on Friday after the feast of the Conversion of St Paul the Apostle, in the year 1284 (27 Jan. 1285), in the presence of Sir William Bisset and Sir Walter of Lindsey and Sir Reginald Crawford and many other faithful men; having and holding in feu and heritage, rendering annually 1d. on Pentecost, and performing the guard service at Berwick Castle as pertains to that land, for all forinsec service and suit of court and all secular exaction and demand, saving to himself and his heirs from William and his heirs ward and relief of the said land.
