- Notes
- A Michael Fleming was sheriff of Edinburgh and a royal clerk under King William, 1198×1214 (Holyrood Liber, App. II, no. 7). King William’s lost charter, a gift to Michael Fleming his clerk of land which belonged to Gilbert Suffach, is RRS, ii, no. 560. King Alexander II’s charter of renewal to Michael Fleming came early in his reign (1/7/1A), and he issued a charter of succession on 13 Aug. 1226 to Michael’s son Archibald (1/7/135A), which suggests that Archibald was still in possession of Gilberton, and that the Michael in this charter is in fact an heir and successor of Archibald son of Michael, perhaps most likely a son or brother.
