Document 4/20/5 (Kel. Lib., no. 211)
- Description
- An agreement is formed between the abbot and convent of Kelso and Bernard of Hadden (ROX) whereby the abbot and convent granted that Bernard may have a chapel in his court where Bernard, his heirs and his household and guests may hear services all year, except for three days, that is, on Christmas, Easter and St Michael’s day, on which days they will come to the mother church of Sprouston (ROX) to hear services. Other men of Hadden shall accept everything spiritual by the mother church and hear services all year. Bernard shall find a chaplain for the chapel and all necessities to serve the church without any expenses made to the abbot and convent, the mother church or whatever chaplain shall serve; the chaplain will swear faithfulness to the abbot of Kelso and the mother church that he will make good to mother church in relation to all the obventions and oblations of the said chapel. Bernard granted that Kelso Abbey shall have 8 acres and one square measure of land in free and perpetual alms besides the land which the monks held previously in Hadden, and he confirmed this land to the church of Kelso so that they may hold their one ploughgate of land in Hadden with all liberties and they may make use of the exit to the pasture through the same land. He conceded also the teinds of the mill and the monks relaxed the common pasture which they claimed in the pasture of Hadden as belonging to the church of Sprouston.
