Document 2/146/19 (Pais. Reg., 235-6)
- Description
- Pope Clement IV writes to the abbot and convent of Paisley, noting their petition that Walter, bishop of Glasgow, of good memory, with the assent of his chapter, had assigned them the church of Craigie (AYR), in which they have the right of patronage, for their own uses, and then when the said church happens to be vacant, they may apply those uses, reserving to the perpetual vicar serving in it a portion from the its profits. Afterwards, John, rector of the church, having gone the way of the flesh, [because of which] the late William, predecessor of the [current] abbot, had presented to the same church Master William del Bois, clerk of William, bishop of Glasgow, of good memory, successor of the said Walter, to the injury of the monastery, whom Bishop William instituted as rector into the same, reserving to them the profits from the church for a certain annual pension which they receive by the same clerk who holds the church; whereby they beseeched the pope that after the death of the clerk should they be bothered or prejudiced by anyone; the pope thus indulges that they shall not be prejudiced through the presentation, institution and detention of the said rectors, from the death or resignation of the cleric, according to the grant of Bishop Walter, so that they may convert and enter into its possession for their own uses, assent from the diocesan or whatever other not being required, and if the said presentation and institution might have been made they may by no means value it, reserving to the perpetual vicar serving in it a portion from the its profits, from which he may be sustained and also to support the episcopal dues and other burdens.
