Pope Calixtus II writes to Thurstan, archbishop of York, informing him that John, bishop of Glasgow, about whom Thurstan has written, has come to the pope and laboured in prayers and in several other ways that he should free him from the exhibition of that profession [of obedience] demanded from him. The pope has not provided his assent to this, therefore John has set out to Jerusalem, and departed from the city without his permission or knowledge. He asks Thurstan to visit the Roman church with his messengers.
