King Alexander II for Newbattle Abbey; has granted ploughgate of land in Carse (STL) which Elias, abbot of Holyrood, Bernard Fraser, sheriff of Stirling, and other responsible men assigned to it on king's command; to be held by same marches by which they perambulated it for monks, with liberus cursus of 'Smaleburn' to monks' mill through their ditch, without disadvantage to canons of Holyrood, as writings between monks of Newbattle and canons of Holyrood, concerning teinds and certain liberties over which there had been an agreement between parties, and to which writings William, bishop of St Andrews, William, bishop of Glasgow, Clement, bishop of Dunblane, and William, abbot of Dunfermline had affixed their seals, bear witness.
