Description
Roll of the Rents of the Monastery of Kelso, both of temporalities, namely of old rents of its lands within and outwith burghs, of the issue of its granges and demesnes, and also of spiritualities, namely of the pensions owed in its churches and of the old lease (assedatio) of its teinds. OF THE TEMPORALITIES: Redden (ROX): The monks [of Kelso] have in the sheriffdom of Roxburgh in temporalities the Grange of Redden with the toun in pure alms, where they have demesne in which they cultivated by five ploughs, and where they can have a flock of mother sheep of about 14 X 20 (280) and pasture for their oxen. They have there eight husbandlands and one oxgang of land, who perform the following services: one week in the summer, one carriage with one horse at Berwick, and the horse will transport three 'bolls' of grain or two 'bolls' of salt or one 'boll' with a half [???] and in winter they will make the same carriage but the horse will only carry two 'bolls' of grain and a half 'boll' of salt, one 'boll' and a 'firlot' of coal; and one week per year when they come from Berwick he makes on whichever land one day of works. And when they are not going to Berwick, they will cultivate two days a week, and in autumn when they are not going to Berwick, they will make three 'diets'. And then whichever husbandman takes with the land his stock, namely two oxen, one horse, and three chalders of oats, six 'bolls' of barley, and three 'bolls' of wheat. And after some time Abbot Richard exchanged its service for silver. They gave up their stock and gave to whomever for his land for a year 18s. They have there a half ploughgate of land which was Hugh of Redden's, which Richard del Holm held at ferme for... They have there 19 cottages of which 18 pay 12d yearly in rent and six 'diets' in autumn when they receive meal allowances when they will help in placing and shearing the sheep in return for their meals, and 19 cottages which pay annually 18d. in rent and nine 'diets'. And there used to be two brewhouses there, which paid two marks in rent annually. And they have a mill there, which paid nine marks yearly. HADDEN (ROX): They have at Hadden one ploughgate of land, which they have always had in their hands. SPROUSTON (ROX). They have at Sprouston two ploughgates of land in demesne where they cultivated with two ploughs, with all the pasture of the said toun for twelve sheep, four draught horses, and 300 young pigs or sheep. They have there three oxgangs of land which Hugh Cay held, for which he used to pay in rent 10s annually. They have there six cottages, of which the one nearest the vicar's house has six acres of land belonging to it, with a brewhouse, which used to pay 6s yearly, and the other five cottages lie on the other extreme of the toun, which is called Latham, each of which has one and a half acres of land, and which used to pay in rent 3s and six 'diets' yearly. SHOTTON (Northumb.): At Shotton they have two acres of land and common pasture for 400 sheep and they have licence to dig for fuel as much as they wish in that common, and they used to have one man in a mill there and one park and they used to grind their corn from Colpinhope (now Coldsmouth Hill) now they have licence to have a mill at Colpinhope and to grind their corn at the nearest mill, and they gave annually to the mill of Shotton a half mark. YETHOLM (ROX): They have in the holding of Yetholm next to the mill of Colpinhope three acres of land with common pasture of Yetholm which the miller of Colpinhope used to hold, and the monks there use to have and to make a container of their goods from Colpinhope, for when they may perceive danger from the other side. CLIFTON (ROX): At Clifton they have seven acres of land and which the lord gave to the church of Mow for provision of bread for the Eucharist. COLPINHOPE (Coldsmouth): They have a grange which is called 'Colpinhopis beyond the march' which can be tilled with two ploughs for the time of winter and to have in pasture twenty oxen and twenty cows and for a year take away their offspring, and for 500 mother sheep and 200 other two-toothed sheep. MOW (ROX): At Mow they have at 'Altonburn' fifty acres of arable land and meadow with pasture for 300 two-toothed sheep with free entrance and egress, and for ten oxen and four draught-horses. And they have in wood at the 'Scrogges' stake and hurdle and rods for repairing their ploughs. They have there next to the land of Thomas Palmer four acres of land which their herdsman used to hold with the pasture for their livestock and they could have there a brewhouse. They have in the toun of Mow fourteen cottages which each used to pay in rent every year 2s and 6 'diets' (work days) and they had common easements of the said toun and to go with their chattels and they have there a brewhouse which pays in rent yearly two marks. They have at 'Senegideside' in the said holding seven acres of land where the herdsman dwells, and pasture in 'Berehope' for 700 sheep who for fifteen years on the Nativuty of St John the Baptist and for a fortnight afterwards, to be removed from that place and the lord of the holding should find them pasture for that time and their neighbouring animals will graze. They have at 'le Stapelaw' four acres of land which Adam of Rule and Iveta his spouse gave them. They have four acres of land at 'Lathelade' in which they can place their sheepfolds and pen their two-teethed sheep which they make outwith Berehope. They have a grange in the same holding called 'Ileshow' which can be tilled with two ploughs and they have there in pasture twenty oxen and twenty cows and 250 mother sheep and 200 fertile sheep. PRIMSIDE (ROX): The have at Primside seven acres of land and common for 300 two-teethed sheep which used to pay in rent a half mark. JEDWORTH (JEDBURGH) (ROX): They have in the burgh of Jedworth 8d. annually paid in rent from Castlegate which was Master Richard Fossard's. STAPLEGORDON (DMF): They have in the holding of Staplegordon one ploughgate of land at Dowglen which used to pay five marks in rent every year. KILOSBERN (CLOSEBURN, DMF): They have in the holding of Kilosbern 40 acres of land belonging to the church of Kilosbern (Closeburn) with a brewhouse and several common easements which used to be leased for ten marks. DUMFRIES (DMF): They have in Dumfries... PEEBLES (PEB): They have at Hope-Kailzie three acres of land which used to pay in rent 3s yearly. They have next to the church of Innerleithen one acre of land which used to pay in rent 12d. yearly. SELKIRK REGIS (SLK): They have in the holding of Selkirk Regis land that is called Bridgelands which contains 16 acres and they have pasture in 'Minchemor' ... of Selkirk Abbatis.... BOWDEN (ROX): They have the barony of Bowden with demesnes, granges, touns, husbandlands, mills, and other things belonging through certain parts. FALDON (SLK): They have a grange of Faldon with 21 cottages which used to pay in rent yearly 10 pounds. WHITMUIR (SLK): They have a grange at Whitmuir that used to be worth 10 marks when leased at ferme and which could be tilled with two ploughs. They have there the toun of Whitmuir where there are ten husbandlands, which pay in rent 6s per year and perform the same service as the husbandmen of Bowden. There are seven cottages there each containing one acre and which pay in rent 5s per year and similarly perform the same service as the cottars of Bowden. And there is one cottage without land which pays 6d in rent. WHITLAW (SLK): They have in the said barony one grange at Whitlaw which used to be tilled with three ploughs and which has in pasture two flocks of sheep, 100 young animals. And there is one ploughgate of land which William Goodall held and which used to be worth 40s yearly. There are 18 cottages, of which four pay 2s in rent yearly and the others pay 18d yearly, and which performs six 'diets'. They have there one brewhouse which pays annually 5s in rent. And they have in the said barony the grange of Holydean which used to be tilled with three ploughs, and where they had 80 cows, 60 fertile cattles, and 200 mother sheep. BOWDEN (ROX): They have the toun of Bowden in which are 28 husbandlands, each of which used to pay 6s 8d every year in rent on Pentecost and Martinmas and perform certain services namely harvesting in the autumn for four days with all his family, each husbandman and his wife and to work five days in autumn with two men, and each will carry one cartload of peat from Gordon as far as the pulleys for one day, and each will carry one cartload of peats from the pulleys as far as the abbey in summer and no more. And each husbandman will make a carriage for one horse of Berwick once per year and will have his victuals from the monastery, those who do this kind of service. And they used to till in a given year at the grange of Newton one and a half acres and harrow with a horse for one day and one will provide a man in the location of the two-tothed sheep, and another man in shearing without victuals and they will respond similarly for the forinsec service and other suits and will carry grain in autumn with one cart for one day, and will carry the Abbot's wool from the barony to the abbey and will provide his own carriage beyond the moor towards Lesmahagow. Abbot Richard changed that service into pennies for the lease of Brother William of Ancrum, then his chamberlain, and William d... They have there 36 cottages, containing 12 and a half acres and a half rod of land which used to pay in rent 55s 8d annually more or less and which cottars worked 9 'diets' in autumn by one man and always providing one man at the place of the two-toothed sheep and for shearing. There are four brewhouses there, which used to pay 10s yearly in rent and for selling to the lord one gallon (lagena) of ale with a half for 1d. The Lord Abbot will take from each house in the toun on Christmas one hen for a half penny. They have there one mill which used to pay 8 marks in rent every year. SELKIRK ABBATIS (SLK): They have the toun of Abbot's Selkirk in demesne one and a half ploughgates of land which used to pay in rent 10 marks yearly. They have there 15 husbandlands each containing an oxgang of land which used to pay 4s in rent yearly and doing nine 'diets' in autumn and two husbandmen will provide one cart to carry peats from the pulleys as far as the abbey, and two of them will similarly will provide one horse going from Berwick to the abbey, as the husbandmen of Bowden do. There are 16 cottages there containing ten acres of land, 15 of which used to pay 12d in rent every year, and one of which used to pay 2s, and performing the services that the cottars of Bowden make. They have there three brewhouses which used to pay 6s and 8d in rent every year. They have one mill there for grain which used to pay 5 marks annually in rent. There are outwith the demesne there, separate from it, 30 acres of land which used to pay 5s in rent yearly. There are four acres of land called 'the land of Richard Cute' which used to pay 6s in rent yearly. MIDLEM (ROX): They have in the said barony the toun of Midlem and there are 29 husbandlands there, of which 27 used to pay a half mark in rent yearly with all the services that the husbandmen of Bowden perform, and the two remaining lands which are free and are Bernard son of Gervase's, paying annually 12s for the same, and tilling with the lord for three days a year, and performing 12 'diets' in the autumn. These services have been exchanged into silver by Abbot Richard as those of the toun of Bowden, namely as those husbandlands which are leased for 11s. There are 11 cottages containing nine acres of land there, each of which used go pay 18d in rent annually. They have there one brewhouse which used to pay a half mark yearly and performing the same services that the cottars of Bowden do. They have there one mill which used to pay together with the mill of Bowden 21 marks. GRANGE OF NEWTON (Lost, near Bowden): They have the Grange of Newton which used to till with seven ploughs with pasture for 80 oxen, six cows in the summer and 60 in winter to forage, 1000 mother sheep, 60 plough horses sufficient to plough all the ploughgates in groups of six. They at Clarilaw (in Bowden, ROX) 21 cottages each of which has three acres of land minus one rod, which paid in rent per year two 'bolls' of flour and mow all the corn of the Grange of Newton and they will have there in pasture two cows and at the end of the year they will remove the offsprint of their cows. MAKERSTOUN (ROX): They have at Makerstoun two ploughgates of land and pasture for 300 lambs and at the end of the year they will remove them and introduce new lambs worth per year 40s. There are at Makerstoun 12 cottages each of which has one toft and a half acre of land and will have two cows in common pasture, out of which four pay every year 4s and nine 'diets' and of which the remainder pay 12d annually and nine 'diets'. And there is one brewhouse which will have one acreof land and will owe 5s yearly. MELLERSTAIN (BWK): They have at Mellerstain one ploughgate of land which used to pay one mark yearly in rent and they have all the easements in Fans and in the holding of Mellerstain. They have there on the other side four acres of land with a brewhouse, which used to pay in rent 5s yearly. GORDON (BWK): They have at Gordon a half ploughgate of land belonging to the church with pasture for 100 young animals and 400 sheep and where the lord's animals pasture outwith the meadow and grain. They have there one ploughgate of land which was Andrew Fraser's which has common easement of the toun and which pays in rent two marks annually to the lord of Gordon and is worth [that]. They have there six cottages which have an acre and a half of land with common easements of the toun, and which render annually 30 cartloads of dried peat for carting, and they will perform 9 'diets' for works when they will. They have there a toft for building the chaplain's house. They have there two peataries for digging peats. They have at the pulleys one place where they can have a house and containter for receiving their fuel. HUME (BWK): They have at Hume one ploughgate of land which has four tofts with common easements of the toun and which used to be leased for six marks annually. They have there two oxgangs of land which belong to the same church with a toft with common easement. They have there one meadow called 'Harestroyir' (Harestruther?) which contains thirty acres. They have there an annual rent in the land of William de Boseville (Boswell) of 2s 6d, 200 sheep and four 'diets'. They have there annual rent in the land of Geoffrey of Hume 2s 6d, with four 'diets'. WEDDERLIE (BWK): They have at Wedderlie seven acres of land with toft and with common easements and with pasture for 300 sheep. 'DIUIRINGDON': They have in the land of William of 'Diuiringdon' an annual rent of 5s with ward and relief. SPARTLETON (ELO): They have a Grange at Spartleton where they can till with two ploughs and have in pasture 1000 sheep (oves) and 400 sheep (multones) on the earl's moor, and 60 draught cattle (oxen?) and pigs as they require. And they have there 16 or more cottages for their shepherds there and their families. And they had a brewhouse which used to pay 5s in rent yearly. GREENLAW (BWK): They have at Greenlaw a half ploughgate of land which the vicar used to hold and which used to be worth 2 marks yearly. They have there another half ploughgate of land which Alan son of Matthew holds and which used to be worth ? yearly. They have there two oxgangs of land with toft and croft next to the church and five acres of land on the other side of the field with toft which Richard of Greenlaw held, paying 1 1/2 marks annually. LAMBDEN (BWK): They have at Lambden one annual render of a pound of pepper in the land of William of Lambden. FOGO (BWK): They have at Fogo one ploughgate of land with common easements which used to pay 4 marks in rent. They have there a certain chapel with two ploughgates of land and will a mill which used to be worth ten marks annually. LANGTON (BWK): They have at Langton one toft for collecting their teinds. SIMPRIM (BWK): They have at Simprim two oxgangs of land which used to pay one mark in rent yearly. HORNDEAN (BWK): They have at Horndean a half ploughgate of land and pasture for 100 mother sheep, six oxen and two cows, and for two horses where the lords horses go, and a toft. They have there a meadow called 'Hollanmedu'. They have there a certain hospital with 16 acres of land and with a certain fishery on the Tweed with meadow in the holding of Upsettlington, providing for the same one chaplain celebrating there in the chapel and for the sustenance of two paupers. BONDINGTON (BWK): They have at Bondington next to the church of St Laurence two ploughgates of land with two tofts which used to pay 6 marks in rent yearly. They have there one toft next to the church of St Mary and a certain bench under the church for herbage (i.e., a stall for collecting grazing dues). TWEEDMOUTH (Northumberland): They have at Tweedmouth a certain building with a well and with three acres of land which used to pay 20s yearly in rent. They have there a fishery of 'Wodehorne' which used to pay 14 marks in rent yearly. They have there the fishery of 'Northiaru' which used to pay two marks in rent yearly. They have at Berwick the fishery of Berwick which used to pay in rent 20 pounds every year. BERWICK (BWK): They have in the toun of Berwick in the tollbooth an annual payment of 40s. They have there a residence next to the house of the bridge for their own uses. They have in Briggate and Waldegate another annual rent of 10 pounds 3s 5 1/2 d. They have in Uddinggate a residence where there are three scopes (scoops? sweeps?) and which John de Aula holds and which used to pay 10 marks annually. PERTH (PER): They have in rents of St John's Town beyond the Scottish Sea 40s annual payment. STIRLING (STL): They have in the toun of Stirling in a certain tenement 20d annual rent. RENFREW (RNF): They have in the toun of Renfrew in a certain tenement 40d annual rent. RUTHERGLEN (LAN): They have in the toun of Rutherglen in the tenement that was David of Lothian's, a hostelage for fuel, candles, and litter. EDINBURGH (MLO): They have in the toun of Edinburgh a certain tenement which used to pay 16d in rent yearly. WESTER DUDDINGSTON (MLO): They have in Wester Duddingston 24 marks annual rent. EASTER DUDDINGSTON (MLO): They have in Easter Duddingston 10 marks annual rent. PRESTON (MLO): They have the toun of Preston which used to pay in rent 20 pounds yearly. HUMBIE KEITH (ELO): They have the toun of Humbie Keith which used to pay in rent 10 marks yearly. HADDINGTON (ELO): They have in the toun of Haddington in a certain tenement 12d annual rent. LAUDER (BWK): They have in Lauderdale the demesne toun of 'Ulkillestona' which used to pay yearly in rent 20 marks. WHITSLAID (SLK): They have in the holding of Whitslaid 6s annual rent. BROXMOUTH (ELO): They have in the holding of Broxmouth ... which was in the hand of Lord Thomas Randolph and used to pay 40s in rent yearly. They have in the land of Eda of Broxmouth which they have in the aforesaid holding 31 acres of land paying 8s in annual rent. MISCELLANEOUS: They have from the ferme of the lord King in the toun of Roxburgh an annual payment of 100s. They have from annual rents in the toun of Roxburgh in various tenements 8 pounds, 2s, 9 1/2 d. They have in the toun and burgh of Wester Kelso in annual rents 9 pounds, 16s, 9 1/2d. They have in the toun of Easter Kelso for their own uses a sum of rents which is yearly ... They have of the rents of freeholders there ... They have in demesne there which used to be tilled with 7 ploughs and they have in pasture... They have there a mill which used to be worth 20 pounds yearly. They have there a fishery on the Tweed of the holding of Broxmouth (sic) beyond the water of Eden.
