- King Robert I notes that since he has been held to James lord of Douglas in 4,400 marks for the redemption of Robert Bercham, William Bercham, Elia Inyllage, knights of France, and their valets through the same James at Byland in England recently captured and liberated by him [King Robert] at the instance of his most beloved friend the most serene ruler the lord king of France. In partial compensation for this debt, King Robert has given James indictments of thefts (latrociniorum) and their administration within the barony of Douglas (LAN), in the king's forest of Selkirk (SLK) of which James is the officer, within the constabulary of Lauder, within the forest of Jedburgh with Bonjedward (ROX), within the barony of Abbotrule (ROX), within the barony Westerker (DMF), within the barony of Staplegordon (DMF), within the barony of Romanno (PEB), and in any other lands in the kingdom that James holds in chief; saving to the king all articles and homicide pertaining to the crown; holding in feu and heritage in perpetuity. He also wills and concedes that James and the men living on those lands shall be free in future of suits of court, of castleward, and of other prises, tallages, carriages and captions relating to the king's works, saving as much common aid as relates to the defence of the realm. And so that this present charter shall remain strong forever, the king will personally invest James's hand with an emerald ring in permanent memory of sasine.
