Waltheof (Saint), abbot of Melrose (d.1159)

Biography
Watt and Shead, Heads, 149; Watt and Murray, Fasti, 378: Waltheof (Waldef) was the stepson of King David I, and was sacrist of Rievaulx Abbey when he was created abbot of Melrose, the daughter-house of Rievaulx, in 1148. He was elected bishop of St Andrews, before the end of May 1159, with the consent of his nephew, King Malcolm IV, but declined the office. He died on 3 August 1159, while still abbot of Melrose. He was grandson of Earl Waltheof, brother of Henry, earl of Northumberland and Simon, earl of Northampton.
