Ralph of Dundee, son of Gregory Long, master, clerk (d.1306×07)

Biography
Watt, Graduates, 162-63: Ralph was the son of Sir Gregory Long, a burgess of Dundee (d.after 1268), and was presumably the brother of Hervey of Dundee (d.1281). He appears to have married a woman with lands in Glassary (ARG) with whom he had one son, John of Glassary, who was his heir in Dundee and Argyll, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, who married a son of Colin Campbell of Loch Awe. He is first found at the papal curia at Orvieto on 28 December 1272. He was called dominus in sources in 1277, 1278 and 1283, presumably studying at Bologna, and called master on 11 July 1284. He was a canon of Ross by 28 December 1272 and of Glasgow by 1277. He was in Dundee by 27 May 1281, at which time his brother was probably dead. He returned to Bologna at some point after August, but returned to Dundee by 1 April 1284. In July of that year, he was described as a king's clerk. He died between September 1306 and 24 May 1307 (CDS, v, ii, no. 429).
