- Description
- Alexander, king of Scots, sends to R(obert), bishop of Glasgow, word for word, the inquest made at Roxburgh regarding a dispute between the master and brethren of Soutra and Walter of Moray, knight; the inquest was made by the command of the king in the full court of the county of Roxburgh, on the Tuesday next after the 20th day of Christmas 1271, by the elders of the country who better know the truth of this matter, that is, Richard James, suitor of the barony of Eckford and by four of the more trustworthy men of the whole barony; and by Hugh, suitor of the barony of Upper Crailing, and by four of the more trustworthy men of that barony; and by Richard, suitor of the barony of Heton, and by four of the more trustworthy men of that barony; whether the late Sir Walter Olifard used to give to the house of Soutra every year from every plough within the land of Crailing and of Smailholm, both from his own ploughs and the ploughs of his bondmen, one thrave of corn; it was judged that the brethren of the house of Soutra and their attorney for a long time had been accustomed to receive it, and that they should receive the said corn from Sir Walter of Moray and his men.
