Document 2/54/0 (Stevenson, Docs., ii, no. 626)
- Description
- Alexander of Bicknor and Ralph of Benton, clerks, write that whereas they have been sent to Sir Richard of Bromsgrove and Alexander of Convers on the part of Sir Aymer de Valence, lieutenant of their lord the king on this side of the Scottish sea, by a letter of credence concerning the affairs of the king, know that their credence is to this effect: They should tell the said Richard and Alexander that the Scots have openly assembled with all their force in the lands; further reports on their movements follow. Sir John of Menteith and Sir Alexander Menzies, who had come to treat for peace, broke up their business because of the scarcity which they saw among the people. Sir Aymer de Valence promised them that if money had arrived they might think themselves safe; whereupon they held themselves satisfied; and that he was not strong enough to stop the enemies without them. Richard and Alexander ought to do his commandment.
