Memorandum that the king has appointed that in the castle of Dumfries there should remain twelve men with armed horses, who shall have among them all twenty-four foot soldiers by the appointment of Sir Robert de Clifford. Also, the twenty crossbowmen who were at Berwick, who were appointed to the said Sir Robert at Durham, and the six crossbowmen whom the said Sir Robert de Clifford shall place there, whom he took from the castle of Lochmaben, and four footmen of his own. Also, a master engineer and four carpenters. Also one smith and his lad; one engineer and two masons, whereof the amount shall be 76 persons. Specific provisions are provided from 20 November 1298 until 30 June. Memorandum that Master Richard of Abingdon, to whom the king by his letters has given directions concerning these things, shall see that all they shall arrive by land in the company of the said Robert. Also, Sir Robert shall place in the said castle two engines, two springalds, two crossbows with winches and two crossbows for two feet. Also, of the bishop of Carlisle, one crossbow with a winch, two crossbows for two feet and as many quarrels as possible.
