Document 5/0/0 (Stevenson, Docs., ii, no. 498)
- Description
- Peter de Deneven and Robert Herouh petition their king and his council that at the time the king was in Flanders, the earl of Warenne, guardian of Scotland, with the earls and barons of England who were in his company recovered the town of Berwick, which William Wallace and other enemies of the king has seized in the king’s 26th year. The said earls and barons told the guardian that they could not well tarry there unless the foot-soldiers were properly paid for their residence. Whereupon the said Peter and Robert, by orders of the earl, took from the merchants of England victuals and other merchandise to the value of 1000 marks and more by indentures made between them and the said merchants under the inspection of Sir Walter de Agmondesham, who then had the expenditure of the king’s money in Scotland, in whose keeping the said indentures continued. Since the said merchants sue Peter and Robert for the said price, they pray the lord king would please order the chamberlain to examine these indentures, and appoint that adequate satisfaction be made to the merchants so that Peter and Robert be discharged.
