Document 1/27/0 (Stevenson, Docs., ii, no. 581)

Description
The king writes to the guardian of the monastery of Kelso and the convent, noting that Brother Thomas of Durham, their fellow monk, has come to the king with letters patent from the chapter asking that as their church is destitute by the continued and voluntary absence of their late abbot, Brother Richard, a rebel and enemy, the king would grant them licence to elect a new abbot. The king duly directs that they may elect a devout abbot and pastor among his lieges.
