- Joan de Clare, countess of Fife, makes known that whereas she was bound to Sir John of Hastings, lord of Abergavenny, for 960 marks (as appears by her letter obligatory which the said Sir John holds from her), and as she is unable to pay the said debt, by reason of the war in Scotland and of the devastation of Sir Herbert of Morham, who has taken her goods and chattels, and she has had reasonable warning from the said Sir John to make the said payment. Joanna, wishing to perform his pleasure, have made the covenants underwritten on Sunday before All Saints, 1299 in this form: Joanna of Clare, countess of Fife, has given and granted and by this script established to Sir John of Hastings, lord of Abergavenny, so as to have acquittance of the aforesaid debt, her manor of Glapthorn with pertinents, in the county of Northampton, and Carlton, with pertinents in the county of Lincoln; together with all her lands in Scotland, namely, Strathord, Kinnoull, and ‘Loygiastre’, in Perth, and Coull and Lumphanan in Aberdeen; to hold for his lifetime, paying to her £80 yearly at two terms.
