- Description
- Alexander, earl of Menteith, since his lord Edward, king of England, by his especial grace has delivered his body from his prison, where he was because of the wrong he had done to him before now in bearing arms against him, and in another ways, and thereupon surrendered the aforesaid earldom of Menteith, both the appurtenances, together with all the other lands, which are held of it in chief, and ought to be, that is to say those for which he did homage to John Balliol, once king of Scotland, to hold at the pleasure of his lord the King of England aforesaid, as entirely as he forfeited them to him because of the wrong aforesaid; he recognises by these letters that he has received from the said king of England the same earldom and its appurtenances, together with its other above-mentioned lands, to hold at his pleasure, so long as he promise for himself and his heirs, on pain of body and possessions, to serve him loyally, etc.
