- W[illiam] and R[obert], bishops of St Andrews and Glasgow, John Comyn and James Stewart of Scotland, and Brian fitz Alan, Guardians of the realm of Scotland established by lord Edward, king of England, supreme lord of the realm of Scotland, write to Alexander de Balliol, chamberlain of Scotland, noting that because Master Thomas de Carnoto [de Chartres], formerly chancellor of Scotland, received nothing of his yearly fee by reason of his office from the middle of Lent past up to the feast of St Barnabas the apostle, as they understand; they command Balliol in the name of the same king of England, and instruct him to pay to Master Thomas, or his attorney, the bearer of this letter, a quarter part of his yearly fee, that is, £25 sterling.
