- William of York, the clerk, by the precept of Sir Hugh Gubbin, vicegerent of Sir Robert son of Roger, guardian of the villa of Berwick, under oath, with six of his friends, following the tenor of a mandate of King Edward [that, Edward, son of Henry, the first, subdued Scotland, after the death of King Alexander, John de Balliol being king], delivered to Brother David, lay-brother of Melrose, representative of abbot and convent of Newbattle, sasine of their tenements and returns existing within the villa of Berwick (BWK), viz. a certain tenement which lies between the tenement of the late William Spure to the south on the Ness, and the land of the late Adam Monk to the north for their sole use, forty-six shillings and eight pennies from the tenement lying on the Ness between the land of the late Adam of Scremerston to the east and the land of William of Culnesse to the west, and twenty shillings of the annual render from the tenement of the late Thomas of Ravinsher lying on St Mary’s road between the tenement of the late Thomas of Scremerston and the land of the late Stephen of Badby, and twenty shillings from the tenement of the late Walter of Fenton in the south-gate, lying between the land of the late Robert of Barton to the south.
