- Description
- William of Durham, the knight, has given, granted and by this his present charter established to Melrose Abbey, for the salvation of his soul, and his ancestors and sucessors, all the lands or burgages which he had in the burgh of Peebles (PEB), with the messuages, pertinents, liberties and easements belonging to the lands or burgages, viz.: those lands or burgages which he bought from John the forester and Thomas Lillie which lie between the land of Saint Mary [of Melrose?] to the west, and the land which belonged to Henry son of Emma to the east. The lands are to be held and had by the monks and their successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms. The monks are to render to the king every year the owed and customary ferme. In the future, William and his heirs are permitted to extract nothing from the lands or burgages, or from the monks by reason of the lands, except only prayers. William promises warrandice.
