Document 3/632/29 (Melr. Lib., no. 369)
- Description
- Adam of Selby, burgess of Berwick, for the salvation of his soul and for the souls of his father, mother and all his ancestors and successors, has granted and by this his present charter established, and expressly renounced, for him and his heirs, to Melrose Abbey all right and claim, if he had it or was able to have it, in the site of the northern gable of the monks’ great house of the east [which is located] in the direction of the sea in the villa of Berwick (BWK) near Adam’s land and his buildings. The charter states that during the construction of gable and the foundation of their house, the monks accepted a small amount [of real-estate] from Adam’s land, following which he granted the gable to be held [by them because] it was considered necessary for the good of peace. The charter states that it will be permitted for the monks to demolish, move and prepare the gable for the use and improvement of their house, without the opposition of him and his heirs, as often as this may be seen to be expedient by them. However, the abbot and convent will receive nothing more [from Adam] than they had at the time of the production of this charter.
