On the same day [7th], in the evening, in the year [1296] and Indiction [9] and month [July] recorded before; gathered in the presence of the notary and witnesses written below, specially called and summoned for this purpose; the honourable prince, the lord John, by the grace of God king of Scotland, appeared in his full and free royal authority; openly and in the sight of all, he willingly and clearly acknowledged with his own tongue that, led astray both by his own rashness and the advice of corrupt men, by means of certain of his representatives and messengers sent to France, he contracted in deed with the lord Philip, king of the French, and certain others of the kingdom of France, against the most high prince, his lord, the lord Edward, by the same grace illustrious king of England, certain alliances, agreements, contracts, and illegal pacts, in the name of himself, of Edward his son, and of the inhabitants of his kingdom, against his due homage and fealty previously performed to the said king of England in return for his kingdom of Scotland; and afterwards he ratified these aforesaid alliances, agreements, contracts, and pacts entered into in the name of himself, his son Edward, and the inhabitants of his kingdom, and approved them, and confirmed them by his letters patent; he said that he earnestly grieved for injuries of such kind, and that he was heartily penitent; and declaring that he was willing to be reconciled to his said lord, the king of England, and to hold to him thereafter, having spurned and being obliged to no-one, he revoked, broke, made void, and cancelled the alliances, agreements, and pacts written above; and he publicly declared the same alliances, agreements, treaties, contracts, and pacts, and whatever followed from them of any kind, or by any means could by any means subsequently arise, insofar as they had effect in reality, to be revoked, broken, null and void; and he willingly, clearly, distinctly, and absolutely renounced the same. He renounced, moreover, specially and expressly, every benefit that thereafter of any sort could accrue to him, or to his aforesaid son, or to the inhabitants of his kingdom. Performed in the churchyard of Stracathro, in the sight of Anthony, bishop of Durham; in the presence of the noble men, the lord Humphrey, earl of Hereford, the lord John Comyn, earl of Buchan, the lord Hugh le Despenser, and the lord John Comyn, the elder, of Badenoch, knights, specially called and summoned for this purpose.
