- John, lord of Edington, for the salvation of himself, and for the souls of his ancestors and successors, has given, granted and by this his charter established to Newbattle Abbey free transit through his land of Edington (BWK), with their animals and carriages which are to be taken to the villa of Berwick-upon-Tweed, or to be returned from the same villa to the monastery, by the roads which they have made use of in previous times, as often as they may see the need to travel there. And he grants to the monks and lay-brothers the liberty to unyoke their animals and carriages and to feed in his land of Edington, within the grain field and meadow, often as they will have work, without any the impediment of him and his heirs, or his men, and to spend the night there when it may be necessary, one time during the journey [to Berwick], and one time during the return, as often as they may make a journey there per year. And if it happens that he or his heirs may have alienated the land of Edington, or any part of it, at anytime, he will always he keep firm his present donation and grant to the church of Newbattle, and he promises warrandice.
