Document 2/10/318 (Newb. Reg., no. 63)

Description
William of Lamberton, bishop of St Andrews, addresses the dean of Christianity of Haddington, and states that because he conveyed the vicarage of Heriot (MLO) of his diocese to the abbot and monks of Newbattle for the support of the church of monastery [and] for their sole use, he firmly mandates the dean to receive the monks, or anyone in their name, and the dean should establish their deputy in the vicarage by the bishop’s authority and bring him into corporal possession of the vicarage and defend the inducted. The bishop states that opponents and rebels [to this induction], if they may exist, should be restrained by ecclesiastical censure, and as a signal of the institution made by the dean, and the surrender of the possessions of the vicarage, he should append his seal to the present [charter].
