Document 2/10/291 (Dryb. Lib., no. 243)
- Description
- William, bishop of St Andrews, addresses the deans of Merse and Haddington and states that he understands that the deans are burdened by the fact that Dryburgh Abbey [renders to bishop] the procurations, aids, and synodal dues owed to the bishop from the canons’ churches existing within their deaneries. The abbot and convent showed to the bishop, through their charters, that the church of Gullane (ELO) is being held for eight annual marks: four marks in the name of the bishop’s procurations, and four marks in the name of the canons’ pension. Henceforth, the bishop wishes, and firmly mandates, enjoining the third party appointed by the deans [to deal with their pensions], that the bishop will make sure to allocate to the deans the money which was owed to the bishop from the said churches and which is a burden to them. The abbot and convent of Dryburgh are to be guaranteed four marks annually from the church of Gullane. Henceforth, the bishop desires that the deans should extort or levy no pension from the church other than the aforesaid money.
