Notes
Earl Duncan II of Fife paid 500 marks to the English crown for the ward of Roger de Merlay’s land and his son, and that the son would marry Earl Duncan’s daughter, paying 250 marks in 1188 and the other 250 marks in 1189 and 1190. CDS, i, nos. 191, 202. This charter suggests that Roger de Merlay III may have been the product of this union. A Roger de Merlay also witnesses a charter of John son of Michael to May Priory (St And. Lib., 380).
