- John son of Geoffrey of Lindsey, burgess of Berwick, holds himself obligated to Newbattle Abbey for the burgage of ‘Sutergath’ (Southgate?) in the villa of Berwick, lying between the burgage of Robert of Barton on the south side and the burgage of the hospital of Rutherford [?] on the north side, which he holds and possesses at feuferme from the Abbot and convent, for an annual payment to them or to their attorney of 21s. 4d. legal sterling, under penalty of £10 to the Abbot and convent for default of payment.
