- Richard Fleming, chamberlain of William de Brus, by the consent and good will of his lord, William de Brus, has given, granted and by this his charter established to Melrose Abbey, for the soul of his lord, Robert de Brus, and the soul of himself, his wife, and all his ancestors and successors, relatives and heirs, in free, pure and perpetual alms, his whole saltpan of Rainpatrick (DMF) by the same bounds by which he himself held the aforesaid saltpan which are stated and include the saltpan which the monks of Melrose held from his lord, William de Brus. This saltpan with pasture for 4 oxen and one horse and with sufficient fuel from the peatery at the saltpan itself, he gave and granted to be held by them in perpetuity from him and his heirs freely, quietly, fully and honourably. Melrose will render one pound of pepper annually at the assumption of the blessed virgin.
