John de Vescy, for the salvation of the lord Alexander, illustrious king of Scotland, and for the souls of all his ancestors and successors, and for the salvation of himself and for all his ancestors and successors, has granted and made firm by this his present charter, to God and the church of St Mary at Melrose, the donation which William of Sprouston, the chaplain, former vicar of Mow, solemnly made in his (John's) court of Sprouston to the Abbot and Convent of Melrose, as his assignees, of his whole land in the territory of Mow (ROX), which John gave to William, to be possessed by him and his assignees by perpetual right, and with respect to which William dissaised himself, and solemnly saised the abbot and and convent solemnly, for them to hold and have in free, pure and perpetual alms by the bounds by which William the chaplain held or was able to hold it, with all the pertinents, freedoms and easements. Additionally, John granted other specified property and responsibilities in the land to the monks, including the service of the land of Thomas Palmer, the land of the late Henry of Mow, which Henry had from the donation of William the chaplain, where the abbot and convent infeft William's nephew (nepos), Vedastus of Jedburgh, half the service of the land of Simon of Blackdene, half the service of the land of Thomas son of Avicia, and the half the service of the lands which pertain to Ranulf Wishart and Joanna, his spouse.
