- William of Hownam, son of John, has given, granted and by this his charter established to Melrose Abbey, for the soul of Kings David and Malcolm and Earl Henry and for the salvation of his lord, William, king of Scots, the queen, David, brother of the lord king, and for the salvation of all their ancestors and successors, and for the salvation of his soul and his wife, Dunantia de Clerefei, and all their ancestors and successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms, the whole land by the river of 'Cnidenop' all the way to the trench between Raeshaw (in Hownam, ROX) and Cuthberthope, by stated bounds. He gave and granted all this land and whatever is contained within the stated bounds to them in perpetuity, and he and his heirs will acquit the land of the said monks from all terrestrial service and all secular exactions and will support and warrant [them] against the lord his king and all men in perpetuity.
