Uhtred of Grubbit and Simon, his son, have given and by this their charter established, to Melrose Abbey, for the souls of Earl Henry and others, that piece of land in ‘Elstaneshalche’ that lies from the west side of the old water towards the land which the said monks have in the feu of Whitton (ROX), to the east of their land, in free, pure and perpetual alms, free and quit from all terrestrial service, custom and secular exaction. They will acquit to the lord king and to all their lords, the forinsec service and all earthly service in perpetuity.
