Document 4/24/1 (St A. Lib., 321-2)
- Description
- Agreement between (i) the church of Linlithgow (WLO), and (ii) A[lexander], son of William, son of Thor[ald], that the same A[lexander] shall have a chapel and chantry with the permission of the church of Linlithgow in his court of Ochiltree (WLO), for himself and his family and his guests, saving the right of the mother church, and teinds and oblations and bounds and all other things pertaining to that church, so that the chaplain serving there shall be chosen and instituted by the church. A[lexander] will provide necessities, at his own expense, in food and clothing and ‘laboris mercede’, so that nothing will be demanded from the church. The chaplain who is insituted will swear an oath to the church of Linlithgow that nothing will be done to the detriment of the church, whether in teinds, bounds or the offerings of A[lexander], his family or their guests. In order to establish this agreement, the aforesaid A[lexander] donates to the church two oxgangs of land in perpetual alms in his villa of Ochiltree, and one toft in the same place, and the teinds of his mill, as his charter attests and establishes. However, the land will be held of Alexander during his lifetime for an annual rent of 4s. After his death, it will remain the property and possession of the church, free and quit from all service and secular custom.
