Document 4/20/61 (Newb. Reg., no. 34)

Description
An agreement was made between the abbot and monks of Newbattle and Alexander of Drochil (PEB) and Alice, his wife, concerning the marches between the land of Kingside (ROX) and the land of Newbattle Abbey called ‘Spurland’ (Spurlens Rig?). The marches between the two are to be observed thus, from the head of the spring which is called 'Beriswell' towards the west linearly just as the meadow and arable land divide, up to the stream which descends from 'Kingwell', and as the same stream first descends from the same spring towards the south and then towards the west. The peatery below the villa will remain with the abbot and monks. Alexander and Alicia have taken an oath on the Gospels to observe these marches that they will not attempt to reclaim rights beyond these marches and have placed themselves under the jurisdiction of the archdeacon of Glasgow, who may compel them to observe this by ecclesiastical censure.
