Document 4/20/43 (Lind. Cart., no. 114)
- Description
- An agreement was formed between Lindores Abbey and Sir William of Brechin regarding the land of William, lands of Lindores (FIF), ‘Bondington’ (later ‘Bonytoun’, in Abdie parish, FIF) and Kinloch (FIF), and the land of the late Geoffrey Maupetit, having been held to the mill of the shire of Lindores, which belongs to the abbot and convent by the gift of Earl David. The monks have quitclaimed the suit and multure of these lands to Sir William and his men residing in the lands so that in future neither Sir William nor his men can be compelled to render the suit and multure by reason of any right or custom. In return, William of Brechin has given and granted 33s. 4d. annually, half at Pentecost and half at Martinmas, in free, pure and perpetual alms, to be received out of his land at Lindores by his bailiff, or his farmer or farmers. If within eight days of the set time of payment, the abbot and convent have not received full satisfaction they may, without seeking leave, take poinds from the said Sir William, or his men or farmers residing in those lands. Such poinds were not to be repledged, or given at wad, or delivered up in any other manner until full satisfaction has been given. Sir William also grants that the said lands shall not be given or alienated to any, but shall remain under obligation for the yearly payment; Sir William also grants that the water which comes down from the great lake of Lindores to the mill of the abbey shall in no way be obstructed by Sir William’s mill, but that they shall have that water as free as they were accustomed to have by the gift of Earl David.
